What is the McKenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method ® is a philosophy of active patient involvement and education for back, neck and extremity problems. The key distinction is its initial assessment component—a safe and reliable means to accurately reach a mechanical diagnosis and only then make the appropriate treatment plan.
The treatment approach is an active means of helping spine problems like sciatica, referred pain, back/neck pain etc. using specific direction exercises to move pain that you may feel in your limb more to the center of your spine and then abolish it completely. These directional preference exercises become part of your home exercise program prescribed on day one of your treatment. The same principles are very effective in managing extremity problems in the shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee and ankle/foot.
The McKenzie Method helps prevent recurrence of symptoms through education of the problem, reasons why it occurred and again specific exercises to prevent. On discharge each patient will have a simple exercise program specifically designed for them to continue to perform maximizing their musculoskeletal health.
Physical therapists undergo a postgraduate education process to be able to utilize the McKenzie Method appropriately. Therapists can be certified in the approach (Cert. MDT) and then complete a full residency diploma (Dip. MDT), the highest level of training in the method. Upon completion of the diploma their clinic can apply for Certified McKenzie Clinic status. Currently Apex Physical Therapy is the only such outpatient physical therapy clinic in the Lakeway Region with this prestigious status.
Industrial Rehabilitation Services
Our industrial rehabilitation services are comprehensive. We accept all worker’s compensation cases and communicate efficiently with the referral sources. Along with our physical therapy services, we offer work conditioning programs customized to meet the needs of that specific individual. The goal is to reduce the painful limitations and restore the functional endurance required to return to work safely and effectively.
We also perform Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE’s) when requested. This is a 21-task functional assessment designed to accurately determine the safe maximum abilities for performing work. This is done to assist in the return-to-work decision for the injured worker. An FCE is also appropriate as a pre-employment screening in order to assist the employer to match potential employees to jobs matching their functional abilities.
